Advanced Life Sign Monitor

Title: Advanced Life Sign Monitor

Location: NIWC Hawaii

Duration: Year Round

Start Date: May 2024

Requirements: US Citizen, DoD Veteran, Current Student

Pay: $30/hr

Project Overview

Are you a student interested in cutting-edge technology and its potential to save lives? Join our research team as a Research Intern and contribute to the development of an Advanced Life Sign Monitor. In this project, we are exploring the use of UAV-mounted Doppler radar technology for non-invasive physiological monitoring, including heart and respiratory rates. Similar to the radar used in weather forecasting, this technology detects very small motions in human respiration caused by the displacement of the chest and heart.

Project Background

Our research focuses on creating a remote Doppler radar physiological sensing technology that is not only cost-efficient but also compact and lightweight, with low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) requirements. This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize wide-area outdoor and indoor surveillance, making it invaluable for search and rescue operations and other critical situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with our research team to develop and test the Doppler radar sensing technology.

  • Assist in designing and building a cost-efficient, lightweight, and low SWaP dual radar system.

  • Conduct experiments to measure and analyze physiological indicators, such as heart and respiratory rates, using Doppler radar.

  • Work on motion compensation systems for moving platforms to ensure accurate monitoring.

  • Contribute to the development of solutions that enable wide-area surveyance for search and rescue operations.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong interest in cutting-edge technology and its applications in healthcare and emergency response.

  • Willingness to learn and collaborate in a dynamic research environment.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education and Learning opportunities

This Research Internship offers students a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking technology that can potentially save lives in critical situations. You will gain hands-on experience in radar technology, physiological monitoring, and motion compensation systems. Collaborate with experts in the field and deepen your understanding of advanced life sign monitoring.
